Please be guided that this is only a theory and not a fact. Important Note: This theory is based on the Five Elements of Japanese Mythology. It is slightly different from the Five Elements of Chinese Mythology and should not be confused with it. The Five Elements based on Japanese mythology: ... fire > wind > sky/heaven > earth > water > fire ... (cycle) The Five Elements of Naruto: In Naruto, sky/heaven is seemingly specified as lightning. ... fire > wind > lightning > earth > water > fire ... (cycle) The elements fire and sky/heaven are associated with yang. The Uchiha specialize in the element of fire. Consistently, this is manifested by Sasuke as well as the element of lightning (chidori). Note that the element sky/heaven in Japanese myth is synonymous to lightning in Naruto. The elements water and wind are associated with yin. The Hyuga are yet to show any elemental affinity, if at all. Note, however, that the Hyuga divination field is similar to the bagua, the ultimate device in Chinese geomancy (feng shui, literally wind water). Wind and water are believed to direct qi (energy) - wind carries energy, representing the principle of change and transformation; water withholds energy, representing stability and inner strength. The principle of change of the wind may be portrayed by Neji; the principle of inner strength of water may be portrayed by Hinata. One filler arc pointed out that Hinata uses water to sharpen her absolute defense but it is still considered unofficial. The element left out is earth which may either be viewed as: 1. The balance of yin and yang together; or 2. A metaphor of yin that is matched by sky/heaven metaphor of yang. NOTES (1) During the chuunin exams at the Forest of Death, Team 7 was given the scroll of Heaven. (2) Orochimaru gave Sasuke the Seal of Heaven. Kimimaro has the Seal of Earth. ? Wind (yin) = Wood (yang) ? Sometimes, the Japanese element of wind is equated to the Chinese element of wood, which causes confusion because wind is (theoretically) yin and wood is yang. Clarifications This theory assumes that wind element is yin based on the wind trigram from the bagua. 1. First, note the difference between the Chinese and Japanese Five Elements philosophies. The Five Elements based on Chinese mythology: ... fire > metal > wood > earth > water > fire ... (cycle) The Five Elements based on Japanese mythology: ... fire > wind > >sky/heaven > earth > water > fire ... (cycle) In I Ching, all are directly correlated except: Metal (yin) : Sky/Heaven (yang) Wood (yang) : Wind (yin) This relationship may be found by taking a closer look at the eight trigrams. Each trigram has a specific polarity (yin/yang) and a corresponding (Chinese) classical element. Among the last two correlations, observe that: - the trigram of Sky/Heaven (yang) is correlated to the element of Metal (yin). - the trigram of Wind (yin) is correlated to the element of Wood (yang). The trigram polarity is constant. Hence, although wind is sometimes equated to wood, wind being yin is independent of wood being yang. 2. More often, wood is yang and metal is yin. However, fictionally, Yamato’s wood affinity is a combination of water and earth. - the trigram of Water (yin) is correlated to the element of Water (yin). - the trigram of Earth (yin) is correlated to the element of Earth (balance of yin and yang). Logically then: water (yin) + earth (yin/balance of yin and yang) = wood (yin) Reversal of elemental polarity (specifically, wood becomes yin / metal becomes yang) can occur in I Ching. Again, the corresponding trigrams' polarities are constant and will not be affected. This is taken into consideration, Wood (yin) = Wind (yin) Metal (yang) = Sky/Heaven (yang) NOTES The similarities between Hyuga and Uchiha prodigies (examples, Neji and Sasuke) may be pointed out using the concept of the Five Elements, where the Hyuga can be indirectly associated to yang via wind (yin) = wood (yang). However, the Hyuga manifests yang much less than the Uchiha.
